Fatherhood Initiative Receives Award

Members of the Christian Heritage Fatherhood Initiative were honored for the Destination...Dad™ program at a September 16 ceremony at the Nebraska State Capitol.

Christian Heritage Co-CEO Gregg Nicklas accepted the award, along with Fatherhood Initiative Director Bill Nelson (far right) and Coordinator Jim Erwin (second from left).

Deputy Director Larry Wayne of Nebraska Department of Correction Services (NDCS) nominated Christian Heritage for the Department's 2010 Partnership Award in recognition of the InsideOut Dad™ program taught in facilities throughout Nebraska. Governor Dave Heineman (center) and NDCS Director Robert Houston (left) presented the award with other dignitaries from the Department of Correctional Services.

We launched our Fatherhood Initiative in 2007 when we determined that a major contributing factor to children entering the foster care system is fatherlessness. That year, the first Nebraska Father of the Year event was held to promote father involvement. After hosting a Leadership Summit on Fatherhood in 2008, we were asked by the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services to work with incarcerated dads to teach them parenting skills and help prepare them to reunite with their children upon their release. The three-phase Destination...Dad™ program was created to assist these fathers and to restore families. Over 300 incarcerated dads have successfully completed the InsideOut Dad™ parenting program.

Christian Heritage recently began providing marriage workshops for incarcerated men to assist in strengthening relationships to enhance stability for their children and envisions providing transportation and supervision of two-hour "daddy day-visits" in the near future.
